It’s exciting to be writing my second newsletter and I hope to receive some feedback from all my readers.
Our SA championship event for 2015 was held at Roodeplaat dam over the Easter weekend in April. The event didn’t attract too many athletes this year however it was great for the woman’s events to have a large Singapore team competing creating heats, semi-finals and finals in the woman’s Olympic distances which mimics the format of racing internationally.
I competed in all the K1 events as well as all the K2 events which made the weekend very busy, I successfully won all the K1 events as well as the K2 5000m with a junior Donna Hutton and finished 2nd in all the other K2 events with Hayley Arthur. I wouldn’t say this was my best SA championship event, the green pea soup water and the horrible side /cross winds made racing extremely challenging along with many delays which made it hard to warm up at the correct time and be ready to race. My body started giving up towards the last day as I woke up feeling sick but just tried to complete the weekend of racing over 200m distances.. Since the SA championships we have created a mini woman’s squad at the Natal Canoe club allowing me to have some sparing partners trying to hang on a ladies K2 wave or challenge them over the shorter distances. It was really fun to sometimes have 7 ladies on the water being 3 K2’s and myself all pushing each other. I am looking forward to the level of the woman’s paddling in our province to keep growing which I am sure we will see early in June with the SA marathon championships and the second sprint trial happening in Natal.
I have been struggling with a small setback in the form tension in my Levator scapulae; in simple terms it’s the muscle running from my shoulder into my neck. I have been receiving treatment and I hope it won’t affect my world cups events.
The sprinting season is moving at a steady rate towards international regattas, we have a small team of 6 athletes competing in Portugal for the 1st world cup and 4 athletes competing in the 2nd world cup a week later in Germany. I hope we all manage to race our best and achieve some great results for South Africa.
Follow the links for each event for updates on the results and hopefully some live streaming.
