A Winter Adventure!!

2010-01-31

I have just spent one week up in the mountains in Austria!!! What an adventure in cold, clean fresh air at an altitude of about 1600m.
We left Hungary early Saturday morning, we drove in a bus to a town called Weinebene in Austria. What an amazing view we had when we arrived as our lovely house in the mountains which looked out over a large mountain range and a valley!
We went for a short lap of the cross country skiing course in the afternoon. We were really lucky to have some fantastic weather for the entire week we were there. The cross country lap consisted of a long incline at the start, then it got a little flatter and then hilly again until the tar road where we turned and went back again, so this time it was mainly downhill!! The downhill managed to make me fall a few times and the first day I got the biggest bruise on my leg, as I didnt know how to slow down around the corners.
I managed to get better at cross country skiing everyday, it was really lots of fun. I started off not being able to go very fast and eventually got used to the movement and got a bit faster up the hill and fell fewer times coming down the hill. Cross country skiing is almost like kayaking as its an alternating movement using your legs arms and your back muscles.
On Sunday I went alpine skiing for the first time!! Nandor was a very good teacher, I first struggled to turn to the left but I had to learn fast as I would ski into the trees off the slopes. Each time we went back to the Alpine course I managed to improve more and more, it was really so much fun to try go faster and still be in control of your movements. I almost went into a fence one day though and the last day I did go into the fence but luckily I was at the beginning of the hill!! I also managed to only fall off the lift once which was also on the last day. I think my mind was thinking of other things and I lost concentration and fell off halfway up. The only way down was to go down a much steeper slope, so that was scary as I couldn't see the bottom of the hill!!
Halfway through the week we all went to the Sauna it was really good until we had to go run outside and roll in the snow and then come back inside again, that was a real winter adventure, I never thought I would ever roll in snow in my bikini!! On Thursday evening we a very bright evening and almost a full moon so we went sleigh riding. I went with Tamas so that I had a driver, Nandor was worried I would crash. This was brilliant, I laughed almost the whole way down!
A week of training in the snowy mountains was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!! It was so revitalising, I forgot I was actually training.
When we returned to Budapest the snow was more than 20cm thick outside my flat, it was incredible. I wished I was staying longer so I could experience some more snow. Its goodbye to the lovely winter weather but Bring on the Summer sun!!
